Part 6: School Ethnic Makeup

As you can see from the picture below, the school was primarily populated with children of European descent and a small number of children who identified as Māori. From about 2010, the school's ethnic makeup started changing rapidly. Many more Māori students enrolled, as did many children of Pasifika Island descent, namely, Samoan, Cook Island and Tongan children.  

 

As of February 2024, the school has three main ethnic groups, European (32%), Māori (23%) and Pacific Island (33%) children with a good number of children from many other Asian countries (12%), including India, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam.

The photo below, showing Room 3 in 2024, shows a typical Ashburton Netherby School class. It highlights the cultural diversity and current multiculturalism of the school.
